History

Real Futbol Institute was founded in 2012 by a group of families and a coach, Carlos Drechsler. The motivation to start RFI was driven by the realisation that in Melbourne at the time there were no football institutions in which coaches and young players could find a supportive and nurturing environment in which to work and develop.

RFI was set up to provide a high quality development program for young players with potential and passion. Every idea and principle was designed to protect and enhance player development objectives.

We took the shape as a not for profit, standalone association, working with partner clubs. This enabled us to have access to facilities and competition, while staying away from club politics or limitations. Through these arrangements, RFI operated it’s well-known Development Program, the full-year team-based scheme for young players, and the Initiation Program, for players between 4 and 7.

Over the years, RFI has seen both its players and coaches progress and achieve beyond expectations. While their accomplishments have given us much pride and joy, our biggest reward has always been the appreciation from our players and families, and the certainty that we keep contributing to a better youth football environment and a better community.

2012

RFI officially open its doors. The first ever activity was a school holiday program. Since this simple beginning the objectives were clear: to be able to enjoy coaching in Melbourne and to help build a good football experience for young kids with potential.

2013

The first ever RFI organised tournament takes place with the Spanish Sevens Youth Football League. This ground breaking Summer tournament was held in 2013 and 2014. It was accessed by invitation only and attracted commercial partners. Already by 2013 RFI had begun to make a strong impact in the youth football community. Our program was propelled into leadership positions thanks to setting new standards on and off the pitch.

2014

RFI was already known for having: An unparalleled quality development program for young talented players, sound management based on supporting players and coaches. A warm, welcoming environment for families. This led to exponential growth which saw RFI rapidly double in size year on year, and extend to new and exciting projects, such as the RFI Spain Tour, which first took place in 2014 and subsequently 2017 and 2018 taking over 40 players under the age of 12 to one of the world’s leading football nations. The delivery of specifically tailored programs at a variety of institutions, including schools, other clubs and futsal.
